Workers' Compensation — Alberta
Alberta workers' compensation is administered by WCB Alberta. The Workers' Compensation Act and WCB public procedures/policies govern correspondence rules, with the WCB Code of Rights and Conduct setting service-level expectations.
Key Requirements
Acknowledgment
Worker must give notice of accident "as soon as practicable." Employer must forthwith record accident details and provide a copy to the worker. Employer must report to WCB using Form 7 within 72 hours of learning of the accident (or 24 hours for fatalities/critical injuries).
Denial
WCB must issue written decisions with reasons. The WCB Code of Rights and Conduct requires decisions to be communicated clearly, with reasons for the decision and information about review/appeal rights.
Mandated Forms
- C060 (Worker Report of Injury): Worker's initial injury report
- Form 7 (Employer's Report of Injury): Employer must submit within 72 hours
- Medical reports: Attending physician reports to WCB
Appeals
Workers and employers may request a review of WCB decisions through the WCB internal review process, and then appeal to the Appeals Commission.
