Workers' Compensation — Northwest Territories and Nunavut
Workers' compensation for both NWT and Nunavut is administered by the Workers' Safety and Compensation Commission (WSCC). The WSCC Policy Manual applies to both jurisdictions, with each policy listing parallel legislative authorities in both territorial Acts.
Key Requirements
Acknowledgment
Worker must report a workplace injury, disease, or hazardous exposure to the employer and WSCC as soon as practicable. Claims must ordinarily be made within 1 year after the injury, disease, or death.
Denial
WSCC must issue written decisions. The WSCC Policy Manual governs claims adjudication standards and decision correspondence.
Mandated Forms
- Worker's Report of Injury: Standard injury claim form
- Worker's Report of Occupational Disease: Disease-specific claims
- Worker's Report of Noise-Induced Hearing Loss
- Worker's Report of Vibration Syndrome
- Employer's Report of Injury
Dual-Territory Coverage
The WSCC operates across both territories with materially the same correspondence workflows. Policies list parallel NWT and Nunavut statutory provisions.
Appeals
Workers may request a review of WSCC decisions through the internal review process and then appeal to the Appeals Tribunal.
